Birth work is deeply personal to me. I became a doula after meeting my biological mother and confronting the deep imprint my own birth experience had on me. The call to be present for women as they crossed the threshold of motherhood was undeniable, but my experience opened my eyes and heart in unexpected ways, expanding my view of birth, womb health, and healing.
Birth is a transformation of body, mind, and spirit, and it is but one expression of the transformational power of the womb. People with wombs have access to ancestral memory (and the corresponding grief, trauma, and conditioning) that is heightened and made available through every menstrual cycle, every sexual encounter, each pregnancy and each mother-based experience. The womb carries our grandmother’s wisdom and pain and will express our deepest, unmet needs, often through "medical conditions" condemned to surgery or hormonal treatments for life to manage. The number of cases of PPMD, endometriosis, pelvic pain, birth trauma and infertility continue to rise, and unsurprisingly aligns with the number of women who have never learned about or been taught to harness their innate healing power.
